National Supported Internship Day - Leighton's story...

On completion of his vocational course based at our Harborne Campus, QAC student Leighton had ambitions to gain employment. He felt a Supported Internship programme, delivered at the College's Pinewood Campus, would be the right option to help him to achieve his long-term goal.

Leighton has excelled on the programme, and is currently accessing two external placements at Timpson’s and Yardley Fives, where he is able to develop his work skills by completing a range of tasks in the workplace.

Both Leighton and his employers are fully supported by our knowledgeable Job Coaches. As Leighton continues to thrive on the programme, he has become more confident and independent, requiring less support from staff and travelling to his placements independently by bus. Leighton's Job Coach will check in with him during his shift to ensure that he is happy and getting the most from the placements.

Work related tasks at Timpson's have included assisting customers, cutting keys and replacing watch batteries. During his other placement at Yardley Fives, Leighton has enjoyed a range of duties, including grounds maintenance related tasks such as painting fences and litter picking.

Leighton has demonstrated a great work ethic and attention to detail throughout, he has received outstanding feedback from both employers on several occasions.

The Supported Internship programme has offered Leighton an exciting stepping stone into the world of work, it continues to help him make positive plans based around his future aspirations and prepare for his next phase of adult life!
