How long were you a Lead LSA before progressing to the Tutor role?

I was a year in my role as a Lead LSA before I progressed to a Tutor.

What skills did you develop as a Lead LSA that has helped you in your role as a Tutor?

When I was a Lead LSA, I developed a variety of skills that have been highly beneficial in my role as a Tutor. These include leadership and organisational abilities, communication skills, problem-solving and time management. Additionally, my experience mentoring and building relationships with students has allowed me to create a positive and effective learning environment in my tutoring sessions.

How did QAC support you through your progression from Lead LSA to Tutor?

As a Lead LSA, I was encouraged to take on more responsibilities, which allowed me to develop key skills in leadership, communication and problem-solving. The guidance and feedback I received from senior staff, including regular performance check - ins, helped me refine my teaching strategies and fostered my confidence in working with students independently. Additionally, my transition to a tutoring role was supported through training sessions that focused on individualised teaching methods and learning strategies, ensuring I was well-prepared to meet the diverse needs of students. The supportive atmosphere and open communication within the team made it easier for me to build on my experience and step into my new role with a solid foundation.

What is different about the role of being a Tutor compared to your previous role?

The Lead LSA role involved more collaborative responsibilities, such as assisting the Tutor in overseeing other LSAs and taking some of the work load off the Tutor. Now being in the Tutor position, it requires more independent planning, lesson design and assessment of student progress.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

My favourite thing about my job is the opportunity to make a real, positive impact on my students' lives by helping them unlock their full potential. I find it incredibly rewarding to witness the progress, no matter how small. Seeing my students gain confidence and achieve milestones they may have once thought impossible is what makes this role so fulfilling and motivating. Every day presents new opportunities, which keeps me constantly engaged and passionate about my work.

What does an average day in your life look like?

An average day in my life as a Tutor involves a combination of delivering lessons, lesson planning and constant adaptation to meet the diverse needs of my students. I begin the day by reviewing each student’s progress and identifying areas that require extra support. In addition to direct teaching, I collaborate with other staff, update progress notes and communicate with parents or caregivers to ensure consistency and continuity in support. My role also involves creating a safe, supportive and inclusive environment where students feel empowered to learn and grow at their own pace.

What is your best memory while working at QAC?

Tough question! I am fortunate to have many happy memories at QAC that involve the students and staff that I have worked with. Therefore, I don't think I can pick one. QAC holds some of my special memories
