Access2Pathways

Intent and purpose:

Access2Pathways is an innovative and structured programme for people that experience barriers limiting their educational, professional and personal development. Through a carefully structured approach, we provide guidance and resources to support young adults struggling on their journey towards achieving their future goals and aspirations.

The programme provides individuals with opportunities to explore education, training, work experience, volunteering, independence and life skills in a supportive and holistic environment.

We have experienced and highly trained staff that help to address critical areas such as managing anxiety, improving self-esteem, and boosting confidence, equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to make informed choices and navigate life’s challenges successfully.

Duration:

12 months (to be revised termly) over three days each week, at the discretion of the provider.

Programme outline:

The programme begins with orientation and goal-setting sessions which are designed to introduce the purpose of the programme and help individuals to identify their chosen pathway linked to their educational and training aspirations, desired life skills or community engagement goals.

Pathways:

Education

A one-year stand-alone programme which offers a maximum attendance of three days a week and aims to help young adults to identify a future full-time educational pathway through Queen Alexandra College or another educational provider.

This pathway provides:

  • Access to workshops and resources on various educational pathways including college taster sessions (in areas of interest)
  • Information on vocational training, apprenticeships, and online learning platforms (through the College Transitions/Careers Team)
  • Visits to educational institutions, guest lectures, and careers fairs

Training and Employment

The Training and Employment pathway supports individuals to explore employment, training, apprenticeships and alternative pathways such as volunteering by utilising our expert networks to access personalised guidance and resources.

This pathway provides access to community organisations and specialist programmes, such as Supported Internships (which offer work experience and volunteering opportunities tailored to participants' interests and skills) through the college’s Supported Internship and Workplace teams.

Community Inclusion, Independence and Health

Supporting the individual and their family to access Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) services and other resources. This will help to develop the young person’s independence and access comprehensive information through workshops with our Transitions team.

This pathway offers:

  • Community outings and activities to familiarise participants with local amenities, services, and recreational opportunities
  • Cultural experiences and volunteering opportunities to foster social connections and a sense of belonging
  • Access to clubs, organisations and community events to gradually expose them to social situations while providing support and encouragement
  • Outreach programmes to engage under-represented groups and invite them to participate in community activities

Individualised Support Services:

All students on the Access2Pathways programme will have access to a range of individualised therapeutic and support services including educational and clinical psychology, mentoring, counselling, occupational therapy and sensory support, speech and language therapy, and assistive technology support. These services will help to address specific barriers such as anxiety, stress, trauma or other emotional issues.

To support personal growth and emotional wellbeing, students will also have access to a range of wellbeing and enrichment activities including art therapy, music sessions, healthy living workshops, confidence building and self-esteem workshops and gym sessions.

Learning environment:

Access2Pathways has its own dedicated building on the QAC campus. This specialised space provides an inclusive environment which is accessible to students with diverse needs, including those with physical disabilities. Flexible learning spaces are available, along with classrooms that can be easily adapted to accommodate different learning styles and needs. There are sensory-friendly areas where students can regulate their sensory input, including quiet zones and sensory rooms equipped with calming resources, safety measures, and protocols, to ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students.

Progression:

Student progress is reviewed at key points during the year and a suitable plan is formed to support students to transition from Access2Pathways.

Transition plans are provided, which support participants as they move towards their next steps which may include further education, employment or independent living.
